Here are the things I’ve read, seen or heard that, on reflection, have had the biggest influence on the way I think about life. I have no rea idea whether anyone who stumbles upon this blog has any interest in this whatsoever, but it’s been a blast sitting down and thinking about these things again…
Deepak Chopra - The Seven Spiritual Laws Of Success
This was my first introduction to the universal law of Karma. If there was one thing as a species I wish we could collectively explore it would be this single concept...
My all-time favourite movie and, as ridiculous as it sounds, something that I think about on almost a daily basis. Every time I think I can't do something or I'm not capable, for some reason this bloody movie plays in my head. A celebration of the human spirit.
Tony Robbins - Awaken The Giant Within
When the kids were young, we were on holiday in Florida and when we got back to our villa after a day at the theme parks, the villa had been broken into. After getting the family to bed I decided I wasn't going to sleep that night and stayed awake. Sitting alone in the dark in the early hours of the morning, I ended up watching a 30 minute infomercial on repeat for some guy called Tony Robbins selling a programme called 'Get The Edge'. Yes it's corny. Yes it's very 'American'. Yes there are lots of faults you can pick out in him and some of the stuff he says. The inescapable fact is, it changed my life. I went back and read and listened to everything else he'd done...
Al Pacino 'Inches' Speech from 'Any Given Sunday'
If this four and a half minutes of raw brilliance doesn't stir your soul then I strongly suspect you've already passed away...
Eckhart Tolle - A New Earth
I didn't come from a religious family, have never been interested in any religion and never considered myself to be in any way a spiritual person...until I listened to this bloke. The idea that every living thing on earth is just a physical (and temporary) representation of the same fundamental life source, blew my mind.
Seth Godin - Purple Cow
Had more of a business oriented impact on me, but an impact all the same. Have been chasing the Purple Cow (to no avail) ever since...
Sally Hogshead - Fascinate
The most influential business-oriented book I've ever read. Everything I perceive today about the word 'brand' comes from this book.
Rumi - The Guesthouse
The only poem in this list. Like a lot of people, I've spent so much of my live trying to fight against every negative emotion going on in my head. For me the idea of acceptance was a major breakthrough. This poem encapsulates that better than anything else I've read
Dead Poets Society
Seize the Day. Enough said.
